'Extra' Long Line at the Supermarket

There's was this really ghetto Sendas supermarket at Largo de Machado until yesterday.  It always had an overpowering stench of drains, moronic staff and lengthy delays at check out, but it was so cheap it was sometimes worth the pain.

Today I was thrilled to notice that it had re-invented itself overnight into another budget chain, Extra.  Assuming the supermarket couldn't get any worse I went in to check it out.  No sewage smell, so that's an improvement.  Staff?  Well they've got those girls wearing Rollerblades and hot-pants with walkie-talkies.  They may or may not be moronic, but at least they look cute.

As for the check-out, well just take a look at the video.  I'd prefer to smell manure than stand in this line any day.

  1. I remember the queues in Sampa when I was there doing some store checks. Generally speaking, the checkouts in Brazil are quite something... :)

  2. That MUST qualify for a Guinness World Record for longest supermarket line! I get panicky if I have both kids with me and there are more than 5 people in front - we definitely wouldn't survive that :)

  3. WTF!? I notice that everyone is holding 4 or 5 items... It must be the buzz of the grand opening.

    Crazy!

  7. What in the hell????

Haha, you're so right. Everyone looks like it's just another day at the supermarket!

I can't believe that line though. However awesome the savings must have been, it's not worth the 2 hours of my LIFE I would lose standing in that line.

    Haha!

  8. I live in the neighborhood and boycotted Sendas after my first visit there... Went to the new Extra yesterday and... I will continue to go elsewhere... The supermarket looks a little cleaner and smells a little better but it's still pretty Ghetto! And, Extra like Sendas won't process my United Airlines Visa card... Nao Autorizado... Why I don't know - Zona Sul and Pao de Acucar process it with no problems... Sendas and now Extra are the only establishments in town that I know of that will not process a foreign issued credit card... BTW the long lines registered in the photos/video occurred at the express lane. I understand that on the day the supermarket opened, the express lane was for shoppers with 10 items or less. Since then its been increased from 10 items to 15 items. Guess they wanted longer lines so they bumped up the number of items...
